Encryption

“We’re not going to outlaw photography because someone takes dirty pictures. People use it for good things and bad things – and it’s the same with encryption.” — Missouri Senator John Ashcroft (Rep.)

(I wonder how much his views changed once he became the Attorney General?)

Censorship

If the First Amendment means anything, it means that a State has no business telling a man, sitting alone in his own house, what books he may read or what films he may watch. Our whole constitutional heritage rebels at the thought of giving government the power to control men’s minds. – Stanley v. Georgia, 394 US 557, 566 (1969) (Marshall, J.)

“Yeah, but that doesn’t apply to perverts!” – Any censor, any time, any place.

Thinking: Averages

Another great puzzle at BrainBrashers today:

A cricketer’s average in his first 20 innings was 15 runs per innings. After a further 10 innings, his average had increased to 17 runs per innings. What was his average for the last 10 innings?

How in the world is cricket played? That score sounds like it will be a monster. And 30 innings? Wow, talk about stamina!

More basic algebra. The first 20 innings the cricketer made 300 runs (20 times 15).

Ten innings later (20 + 10 = 30) the average was 17, so the player made (30 x 17) 510 runs.

Subtract the two (510 – 300 = 210) to discover he made 210 runs the last ten innings.

Which by dropping the zero (210 / 10 = 21), gives you an average of 21 runs per inning to end up the game.

Thinking: Integer puzzle

Brainbashers had a straightforward puzzle today: What is the smallest integer, which, when multiplied by 3 gives a number consisting of only 4’s?.

Go ahead, think about it. It’s not as hard as it sounds.

Yes, now.

Wait, wait, wait.

Ok, here’s how I worked it out. Is the final answer 4? No, 4 is not a multiple of 3. How do I know a number is divisible by 3? I add all the digits up until there is only one digit left. If that digit is 3, 6 or 9, the number is divisible by 3. (e.g. 8787 = 8+7+8+7 = 30 = 3+0 = 3, therefore 8787 is a multiple of 3.)

Ok, how about 44? 4+4=8, not divisible by 3.

Ok, how about 444? 4+4+4 = 12 = 1+2 = 3. Therefore 444 is a multiple of 3. 444 divided by 3 is 148, so the answer is 148.
